Do you know how many volts are in an AA battery? Or did you know that there are several types with different voltages?
Standard alkaline AA/AAA batteries are rated for 1.5 volts, but their initial voltage may be as low as 1.2 volts. Devices that use them are usually designed to operate within the range of 0.9 to 1.5 volts. Other types of AA batteries have voltages that range between 1.2 volts and 3.7 volts.
Use the table below to learn the nominal voltage of different AA batteries according to the type and chemistry.

Nominal and Actual Voltage
The nominal voltage of different batteries differs according to their chemistry.
An alkaline AA (or AAA) battery has a nominal voltage of around 1.5 volts. A LiPo battery has a higher nominal voltage of around 3.7 volts.

However, the actual voltage will differ depending on the battery’s condition and how much it has been used. For example, a LiPo battery may even have a higher actual voltage of up to 4.2 volts, but the voltage of a discharged battery may fall as low as 2.7 volts.
Other AA/AAA battery types also exist. I gave their voltage information in the table above. If you want a simpler chart, here’s one below.
Battery Type | Nominal Voltage |
---|---|
Alkaline | 1.5 V |
Zinc-Carbon | 1.5 V |
Nickel-Cadmium | 1.2 V |
Nickel-Metal-Hyd. | 1.2 V |
Lithium | 1.5 V to 3.7 V |
LiFePO4 | 3.2 V |
Li-Polymer | 3.7 V |
More About AA Batteries
Here’s some information if you want to know more about AA batteries.
Dimensions and Shape
Battery Dimension | Length (inches) | Diameter (inches) |
---|---|---|
AA | 1.94-1.99 | 0.53-0.57 |
AA batteries are small cylindrical shaped batteries similar to AAA, C, and D.
Under the label, they have a silver coating and ridges on their two ends to ensure they can only be inserted in one correct way. The terminals are labeled plus (+) and minus (-).
An AA battery has a standard dimension of 1.94-1.99 inches (49.2-50.5mm) in length and 0.53-0.57 inches (13.5-14.5mm) in diameter.

Use and Longevity
AA batteries are used in various devices that require only a small, stable battery.
How long AA batteries last depends on the devices used and how often they are used. The more frequently you use them, the quicker the batteries will drain, especially in devices that drain them quickly, such as toys with motors and objects with visual displays.
If you have to replace your AA batteries frequently, you should consider using rechargeable ones.
